Larry and Susan McLellan Dental Hygiene Scholarship | This endowed scholarship began in 2013 by Larry and Susan McLellan. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually at the Dental Hygiene pinning ceremony to a 2nd year Dental Hygiene student. |
James and Betty Barr Ag Scholarship | This endowed scholarship was established in 2016 in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Barr. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student enrolled full-time. Preference is given to a student majoring in agriculture. A 2.5 GPA must be maintained. |
Farm Boys Dental Hygiene Scholarship | The Farm Boys Dental Hygiene Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually at the Dental Hygiene pinning ceremony. It is awarded to a 2nd year Dental Hygiene student who has maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher. |
Paul Wesley Morgan Endowed Scholarship | The Paul Wesley Morgan Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018 by Mr. Morgan’s children to honor his memory. This scholarship fund will be used to provide financial support to a Howard College student enrolled in technical or academic courses in an effort to complete the educational requirements necessary to obtain a certificate or associate degree. Priority will be given to agriculture students. |
Kelila Slate Scholarship for the Arts | This scholarship was established in 2018 in memory of Kelila Slate. Kelila had a passion for music and dance and celebrated her life by performing, teaching, and sharing her enthusiasm and talent. This scholarship is given to a deserving student majoring in the arts. |
Joyce Bradley Endowed Vocal Scholarship | Established in 2018 in memory of Joyce Bradley. This scholarship is awarded annually to a music major. |
Tommy Sullivan Memorial Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2018 to honor the memory of Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the firefighting or EMS program. |
Rob Ethridge Memorial Scholarship | Awarded to a deserving Coahoma High School graduate who demonstrates outstanding leadership and good moral character. |
Karl Jobst Scholarship | The Karl Jobst scholarship was created to provide support to aspiring dentists, dental hygienists and those who wish to work in academia. Students from all majors and areas of study are encourage to apply. |
Florence Read Memorial Scholarship | Established and awarded to assist worthy Howard County Students interested in agriculture. |
Anna Smith Nursing Endowment Scholarship | The Anna Smith Nursing Scholarship was established in 2011. Anna Bell Smith joined the Howard College family in 1959 and retired in 1977. She was the Director of Women’s Physical Education and then Dean of Students. She served on the Executive Board for the Texas Association of Heath, Physical Education and Recreation and as a member of the committee that was instrumental in getting health education recognized on all levels in our public schools. She was inducted into the Western Junior College Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 2011. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Howard college nursing student who is a graduate of a Howard County High School. |
The Fab Five Scholarship | This Scholarship was created in 2018 by a nursing alum who attended Howard College. Holly Ludington was a single mom when she attended and graduated from the Howard College LVN program nine years ago. She wanted to honor her five children (The Fab Five) and assist a nursing student with expenses as a way of giving back to those who encouraged her. |
Sue Montgomery Balzer Nursing Endowment Scholarship | The Sue Montgomery Balzer Nursing Scholarship was established in 2015 by Mr. Clifford Balzer in memory of his wife, Sue. Mrs. Balzer was a life-long Howard County resident and graduate of Howard College. She worked as the Registrar at Big Spring ISD for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Balzer had a passion for education and nursing. Many of their family members are in the health care field. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Howard College nursing student |
Martha Slagle Youngman Memorial Scholarship for Nursing | The Martha Jane Slagle Youngman Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in 2004 by Mr. William Slagle in memory of his sister Martha Jane Youngman. Awarded to assist a deserving student accepted or enrolled in the Accelerated RN program at Howard College. |
Louise Worthy, MD Child Care Scholarship | Established and awarded to assist Howard College students with childcare at Howard Cottage. |
Jeb Worthy Nursing Scholarship | The Jeb Worthy Memorial Scholarship fund is a component fund of the Permian Basin Area Foundation. This scholarship was established in 2002 for Howard College in memory of Jeb Worthy by an anonymous donor. The Worthy family has had a life-long commitment to health care in Howard County. This scholarship is awarded every year to nursing students attending Howard College. |
Woodmen of the World Scholarship | Established and awarded to assist deserving students attending the Howard College – Big Spring campus. Preference is given to students whose relative(s) are members of the fraternal organization. |
Valedictorian/Salutatorian Scholarship | The Howard College Board of Trustees offers tuition scholarships to each student certified to be valedictorian of a graduating class of an accredited high school in Texas. This scholarship must be claimed for the Fall semester following Spring graduation from high school. Scholarships for $600 per year are offered to each student certified to be salutatorian of a graduating class at an accredited high school in Texas. In order to eligible for the valedictorian or salutatorian scholarships, the applicant’s name must be on file with the Texas Education Agency, Austin Texas. |
C.D. and Ruby Helen Turner Memorial Fund | Awarded to students that are enrolled at least part-time on the Howard College campus and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Preference will be given to the Howard College service area students. |

Dora Roberts Honors Scholarship | Awarded annually to the top 10% scholastic graduates in the area high schools as certified by the high school principals. These awards are to be used for the first two semesters immediately after high school graduation. Presentation of awards are made at end-of year high school assemblies and graduation exercises. |
Dora Roberts Departmental Scholarship | Scholarships are available to students interested in completing a certificate or an associated degree at Howard College. Students must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA. |
Zula Rhodes 4-H and AG Scholarship | Awarded annually to a deserving student majoring in agriculture. |
Movelda Rhine Memorial Scholarship | Awarded annually to a Howard College Big Spring campus students pursing an Associated Degree in Business. |
Adrian and Mary Randle Scholarship Fund | Established and awarded to assist worthy Howard County students. |
Performance Scholarships | Scholarships are available to students who wish to participate in various performing groups. These scholarships include art, band/choir, theatre, and Livestock Judging Team. Students MUST indicate which scholarship they are apply for on the application. |
Diana Currie Nichols Memorial Scholarship | The Diana Currie Nichols Nursing Scholarship fund was established in 1997 by Diana’s family in her memory. Diana attended Howard College in 1974 and received her BSN at Texas Tech University. She worked at Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Women’s Health. Diana and her family have had a life-long commitment to health care in Howard County. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Howard College Big Spring nursing student. |
J.D. and Mattie Miller Memorial Scholarship | Established and awarded to assist deserving Howard County high school graduates who demonstrate academic achievement and good moral character. Students must have graduated within the past two years. Preference given to Coahoma High School graduates. |
Albert and Katherine McNallen Scholarship | Awarded annually to a student graduating from a high school in Howard County, and interested in the performing arts program. |
P.W. Malone Memorial Scholarship | In 2000, a new scholarship fund was established by the closure of the Malone Hogan Foundation established in 1975. Dr. Malone’s daughter, Mary Frances was responsible for transferring the Malone Hogan Foundation funds equal to Howard College and SWCD for scholarships. Mary Frances Malone said, “My father’s love for education makes this the perfect option for the funds.” Dr. Malone was one of the founding Trustees for the Howard County Junior College District serving 53 years of continuous service from 1945 until his death in 1998. This scholarship is awarded annually. Student must be enrolled full-time on the Howard College Big Spring Campus or SWCD campus and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. |
Red and Robbie Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund | Established and awarded to aid students with high potential in the field of math/science. Must be a full-time student to be eligible for consideration. |
Wendell Lawrence Memorial Scholarship | Established and awarded to aid worthy and needy Howard County Students with outstanding leadership and academic abilities. Must be a full-time student. |
Keating Memorial Scholarship | Student must demonstrate good moral character. Must be enrolled full-time on the Howard College-Big Spring campus and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to graduates from Howard County. Selected by faculty and administration of each school. |
Mary Johnson Scholarship | Student must demonstrate good moral character. Must be enrolled full-time on the Howard College-Big Spring campus and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to graduates from a Mitchell County High School. (Colorado City, Loraine, Westbrook). |
Johnny Johansen Memorial Scholarship | Sponsored by the Big Spring Council of Garden Clubs to be awarded to an Agriculture/Plant Science major. |
Howard College Marketing Scholarship | Given to students enrolled full-time on the Howard College-Big Spring campus and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The student awarded will assist the Marketing Department with various tasks related to maintaining the college website and social media accounts each semester. A time commitment will be required. The Marketing Department will conduct a personal interview prior to selection. |

Big Spring High School Class of ’65 Memorial Scholarship | Established in 2010 and awarded annually to a student who displays a sincere desire to complete their college education and possesses good moral character. The student must be a graduate of a Howard County High School or Sands High School. Preference is given to students whose relative is a member of the BSHS class of 1965. |
John Bayne Memorial Scholarship | Established and awarded to assist worthy students majoring in the field of psychology. |

Permian Honor Scholarship | Awarded annually to area high school graduates who are in the top percentile of their graduation class and who have scored highest on the ACT or SAT. These scholarships are made for up to four years if satisfactory progress is maintained and if the student remains in a college in the Permian Basin. Charles, Lela, and Mary Slough Scholarship | This scholarship is available to High School graduated students planning to attend Howard College. Specific criteria and details are available from the Financial Aid department. |
Mike and Sheila Abusaab Teaching Scholarship | The ‘Mike and Sheila Abusaab Teaching Scholarship’ has been established at Howard College thanks to the generosity of Mike and Sheila Abusaab who are long-time supporters of students and education. Each year, the endowed scholarship will provide a $500 scholarship to a deserving graduate from Big Spring ISD, Coahoma ISD, and Forsan ISD as they begin their teacher education process at Howard College. |
Marie Louise Barnes Music Scholarship | The ‘Marie Louise Barnes Music Scholarship’ has been established at Howard College in honor of Marie Louise Barnes who taught piano lessons in Big Spring for over 50 years. The scholarship was given to the Howard College Foundation by her son, Chester F. “Buddy” Barnes, II, and grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Edmiston and Jason H. Barnes, in remembrance of her love for music and her students. |
Shirley Copeland Memorial Scholarship | This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in memory of Shirley Copeland who passed away in February 2021. Shirley worked for Howard College for 31 years in the grant department and later in the IT department. This scholarship fund will be used to provide financial support to a Howard College student enrolled in technical or academic courses. |
Richard Knous Memorial Scholarship | Established in 2020 in memory of Richard Knous by Mike and Sheila Abusaab. Mr. Knous was a long time employee of Sonic and a big supporter of the BSHS Band. This scholarship is for a graduating senior who is a member of the BSHS Steer Band and will participate in the HC Band. |
Abbeville Dentistry Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2020 by Abbeville Dentistry. This scholarship is awarded annually to three Howard College Dental Hygiene students entering their second year who maintains a 3.0 gpa. |
Beth Peters Sunflower Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Beth Peters by her four sons, John, Sean, Jeremiah and Josh. Beth was a single mom when she attended and graduated from the Howard College Nursing Program in 1988. This scholarship is for a single mom in the LVN or RN program. |
Lynn Thorpe Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2020 by Mr. Jack Thorpe in memory of his wife Lynn. Mrs. Thorpe worked at Howard College for many years. This scholarship fund will be used to provide financial support to a student enrolled at Howard College. |
Jan Foresyth Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2017 in honor of long-time employee Jan Foresyth. Mrs. Foresyth held various positions at the college but served as Director of Institutional Advancement for over 20 years working with donors and scholarship recipients. Scholarships are available for full or part-time students. |
Big Spring Art Association Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2020 by the Big Spring Art Association. This scholarship is given to a deserving student majoring in the arts. Some volunteer work with the BS Art Association is required. |
Guardian Scholarship | This scholarship was established by Pat Carter in January 2020 to help students in need. Pat passed away in September 2020 but he had a passion for giving and was willing to assist wherever it was needed. His family is carrying on his legacy to help where needed. This scholarship is available for full or part-time students with a 2.5 gpa or higher. |
SL Lockhart Memorial Scholarship | This scholarship was established by Howard College alum Alan McClinton in memory of his grandfather S.L. Lockhart in 2019. This scholarship is for a student in the health care field. |
BS Emp Edu CU Scholarship | Established and endowed in 2019 by the Big Spring Education Employees Federal Credit Union. This scholarship is for students in Howard, Mitchell, Martin, Glasscock, Borden, Sterling and Reagan counites. The student must be full-time and maintain a 2.5 gpa or higher. |
William and Lora Mae Pollard Memorial Scholarship | Established in 2015, this scholarship assists students who demonstrate academic achievement and good moral character. This scholarship is available for full or part-time students. |
Permian Basin Association of Pipeliners Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2020 with grant funds awarded from the Permian Basin Association of Pipeliners to assist students in workforce programs. |
ETLD Scholarship | Established in memory of Ehren Tune and Larry Don Harp, this scholarship is awarded to assist a deserving student who demonstrates the potential to achieve college and career goals. Preference is given to graduates of Big Spring or Forsan, majoring in English, History or Political Science. |
Sylvia Polanco CNA Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Sylvia Polanco by her daughter Josette. This scholarship will help single moms and dads who are wanting to start their nursing career through the Howard College Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) program. Mrs. Polanco graduated from HC in 1971 and was an LVN for 34 years. |
DAV Chapter 47 Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2021 by the local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 47. This scholarship is awarded to veterans or children and grandchildren of veterans and is available to a freshman or sophomore student. |
Ann Reynolds Moore Endowed Nursing Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Ann Reynolds Moore by her family. Mrs. Moore was a Registered Nurse in Howard County for many years. This scholarship is for a student in the RN program. |
Lee & Dorothy Straley Endowed Scholarship | This endowed scholarship was established in 2022 in memory of Lee and Dorothy Straley. Preference is given to students residing in Tom Green County and attending the Howard College San Angelo campus. Preference is given to non-traditional students. Preference is given to students working ¾ to full time or recently laid off. Preference is given to students who do not qualify for federal financial aid. This scholarship can be used for short-term continuing education classes. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually. |

Concho Pearl Lions Club | This scholarship was established in 2023. The Concho Pearl Lions Club makes a yearly $1000 scholarship pledge to Howard College San Angelo. The scholarship will be awarded to a qualified student with financial need enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Must be a Howard College San Angelo student and be a US citizen. The award is to be split over two semesters ($500 each) and will be awarded to one student selected by the Lions Club. |
Frank Junell Health Professions Scholarship | This scholarship is awarded to a Health Professions student who demonstrates high scholastic achievement, financial need, and motivation to succeed in a Health Professions program. The scholarship will be awarded for each academic year and the recipient will receive the $1,250.00 scholarship for both fall and spring semesters for the purchase of books, tuition and fees, or other educational expenses each semester. Applicant must be enrolled full time in a Health Professions program and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. |
Howard College San Angelo Foundation Scholarship | This scholarship will be awarded to selected applicants to further their education. Multiple scholarships may be awarded based on the funds available and the number of scholarship applications received. The student must be a HCSA student pursuing a HCSA degree or a HCSA dual credit student. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 college credit hours for each semester. Must be a U.S. citizen. The scholarship is awarded separately Fall and Spring. Applicants must apply for each semester to be considered. |
Howard College San Angelo General Scholarship | This scholarship is awarded to qualified students enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The scholarship amount varies depending on the amount of funding available. Must be a Howard College San Angelo student pursuing a Howard College San Angelo degree. The scholarship is awarded separately Fall and Spring. Applicants must apply for each semester to be considered. |
Justin Callan Memorial Scholarship | The Justin Callan Memorial Scholarship is awarded to qualified students with a minimum GPA of 2.0. The amount of the award will be determined by the amount of available funding. The scholarship is awarded separately Fall and Spring. Applicants must apply for each semester to be considered. |
Nelson Davis Building Futures Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Nelson Davis by his daughter Katrina. Mr. Davis was the Program Chair and instructor for our Construction Trades program at our San Angelo site. He passed away in January 2021 after a fierce battle with cancer over several months. This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Building Construction Trades program at Howard College San Angelo with preference given to a single parent. |
SACMC Auxiliary Scholarship | This scholarship will be awarded to a selected full time Health Professions applicant who demonstrates high scholastic achievement, financial need and motivation to succeed in a Health Professions program. The award will be $1000 for the academic year to be awarded $500 in the Fall and $500 in the Spring. It may be used for the purchase of books, tuition and fees, or other education expenses each semester. Multiple scholarships may be awarded based on the funds available and the number of scholarship applications received. The student must be a full time HCSA student pursuing a HCSA degree in Health Professions. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. SACMC volunteers will receive extra consideration. Applicants must apply each academic year to be considered. |
Texas Trust Credit Union Scholarship | Sponsored by Texas Gives Foundation: This scholarship was established in 2024. The scholarship will be awarded to two qualified students in the Associate of Arts in Teaching in the amount of $1500 split over two semesters of $750 each term and one qualified student in the Electrical Certification program in the amount of $1000 split over two semesters in the amount of $500 each term. The funds will be used to provide scholarships to pay tuition, fees, and books for students who meet the qualifications. Criteria for eligibility include that the student must be currently enrolled at or entering Howard College, must be a freshman or sophomore (if associate degree), must intend to pursue an associate degree or certification of completion, must have a minimum HC GPA of 3.0 OR must have a high school equivalent if a first-time HC student, students with a minimum of 12 credit hours for period of award (if associate degree), students must meet federal or state guidelines for financial need, preference for first generation college students. Applicant must be a US citizen or permanent resident. Photographs and information provided about the students, as well as Howard College’s name and logo may be used for publication in appropriate media by Texas Trust Credit Union and Texas Trust Gives Foundation. Applications must apply each aid year to be considered. |
The Mathis Law Firm Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2023 by The Mathis Law Firm. The scholarship will be awarded to qualified students with financial need enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Must be a Howard College San Angelo student and be a US citizen. The scholarship amounts vary due to amount of funding available. The scholarship will be awarded to one or more students dependent on available funds. Applicants must apply each semester to be considered. |

Permian Basin Area Foundation Scholarship | Awarded annually to area high school graduates who are in the top percentile of their graduation class and who have scored highest on the ACT or SAT. These scholarships are made for up to four years if satisfactory progress is maintained and if the student remains in a college in the Permian Basin. Ram Lal Seekri Scholarship | The Ram Lal Seekri Scholarship is awarded to a full-time SWCD student. To be eligible, the student must have a minimum GPA 2.5 and agree to conduct themselves in a manner acceptable to the community and abide by the rules and regulations of SWCD. The recipient will be required to write a thank you note to the donor by September 1. The recipient will be supported for one year (2 semesters) at SWCD if all criteria are met. Preference will be given to students majoring in (one for)Automotive Technology and (one for) Building Trades. |
Dr. P.W. Malone Scholarship | In 2000, a new scholarship fund was established by the closure of the Malone Hogan Foundation established in 1975. Dr. Malone’s daughter, Mary Frances was responsible for transferring the Malone Hogan Foundation funds equally to Howard College and SWCD for scholarships. Mary Francis Malone said, “My father’s love for education makes this the perfect option for the funds.” Dr. Malone was one of the founding Trustees for the Howard County Junior College District service 53 years of continuous service from 1945 until his death in 1998. The scholarship is awarded annually.Student must be enrolled full-time on the Howard College or SWCD campuses and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. |
Phillip Waldrup Memorial Scholarship Fund | The Phillip Waldrup Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to a full time SWCD student. To be eligible, the student must have a minimum GPA pf 2.5 and agree to conduct themselves in a manner acceptable to the community and abide by the rules and regulations of SWCD. The recipient will be supported for the equivalent of a two-year degree or certificate programs at SWCD, if all criteria are met. Preference will be given to students majoring in Computer Inforamtion Systems/Office Technology. |
Sherrie Baird Memorial Scholarship | The Sherrie Baird Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time deaf or hearing student with 12 or more hours who exhibits good moral character and motivation to complete college and career goals. To be eligible, the student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, be a Texas resident and complete 20 hours of community service (10 hours per semester). |
SWCD Fest Scholarship | The SWCD Fest Scholarship is awarded to an incoming full-time SWCD freshman student who exhibits good moral character and motivation to complete college and career goals and demonstrates financial need. |
Jessie Lee Walters, Jr. Scholarship Fund | The Jessie Lee Walters, Jr. Scholarship Fund is awarded to a full-time SWCD student. To be eligible, the student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and agree to conduct themselves in a manner acceptable to the community and abide by the rules and regulations of SWCD. The recipient will be supported for the equivalent of a two-year degree or certificate at SWCD, if all criteria are met. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree or certificate that is artistic in nature (such as Graphic Design or another Fine Arts program). |
Beverly Buchanan Scholarship | The Beverly Buchanan Scholarship ($500) is awarded to an international student currently enrolled at SWCD with a minimum GPA 2.5. The recipient will receive this scholarship for the academic school year. |

Military Officers Association of America | Applicants must be under 24 years old. Applicants must have a parent eligible for MOAA membership or be children of active duty, Reserve, National Guard, or retired enlisted military personnel. If the applicant served in a uniformed service before completing college, his or her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he or she so served, up to five years. Applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher. Children attending U.S. military academies and academy prep schools are not eligible. Blind Veterans Association | Spouses, dependent children, and grandchildren of blinded veterans are eligible for the annual Kathern F. Gruber Scholarships and Thomas H. Miller Scholarship to assist them with their higher education tuition. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit through an application process that is evaluated by a committee. Gruber and Miller scholarships are for one year only but recipients can re-apply and receive the award up to four times. The blinded veteran family member is not required to be a BVA member for the spouse or child to receive a scholarship. Qualifications for both programs are the same except for an added emphasis on music and fine arts for the Miller award. | |

Scholarships for Military Children | Funded through the Defense Commissary Agency, this scholarship has provided over $15 million dollars in its 16 years of existence to eligible dependents.
