About WTTC
WTTC History
The West Texas Training Center (WTTC) is a facility that serves the workforce training needs of the Concho Valley and West Texas. The center and its consortium partners provide this training via high school courses, college credit courses and programs, continuing education units and professional development courses, customized training classes, distance education (online and interactive television), and by working with regional industry to provide facility space for company-specific training classes. Instruction is delivered via face-to-face and distance education, including online and interactive television.
The WTTC is a collaborative effort involving multiple organizations, including Howard College, the San Angelo Independent School District (SAISD), Angelo State University (ASU), the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, the City of San Angelo, and regional business and industry. Serving as fiscal agent and facility manager of the WTTC, Howard College also offers workforce training programs leading to Associates degrees, certificates, and continuing education units. The SAISD offers numerous courses in career and technology education. ASU served as the fiscal agent and facility manager until those responsibilities transferred to Howard College in September 2008.
The WTTC is housed in a 100,000 square foot building located on 20 acres. The facility, a former Levi-Strauss manufacturing plant, is owned by the City of San Angelo and leased to Howard College to manage as a training center. Construction began on the WTTC in May 1997 to build a facility to provide workforce development training that prepares individuals for professional roles in a complex technological world and provide training resources that support the economic growth of San Angelo and the Concho Valley region.
Phases I & II were completed and Howard College San Angelo and the San Angelo Independent School District moved some of their existing programs to the WTTC, opening the doors on January 2, 2001.
Phases III & IV of construction were completed in August 2003 which provided new areas for existing SAISD Career Development programs; Health Science, Drafting/CAD, Metal Trades/Welding and Electronics/PC Repair.
Phases V & VI were completed in December 2004 and added a flat floor conference room and a small training room available for industry use. It also added additional classrooms for the SAISD along with a new faculty office. A machine shop next to the welding area was also added.
Phase VII was completed in December 2007, adding a large, tiered lecture hall, a distance learning classroom with interactive television technology, and biology labs, classrooms, and faculty offices. This phase was the final stage of renovation and resulted in all space at the WTTC being used.
Phase VIII was completed in August 2009 and included a remodeling of D101 for the SAISD. The space was renovated to offer an audio visual production classroom, including a green room. An electronic messaging system was erected on the front lawn of the WTTC as another part of this phase.
