FEDERAL & STATE WORK-STUDY PROGRAM

Students who have additional financial need may be allowed to work up to 19 hours per week at on-campus jobs. Every effort is made to place students in jobs related to their field of study. Students not eligible for the Federal and State Work-Study Program may apply for other work opportunities through the Institutional Work-Study Program.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND CHECKLIST

  1. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application is available from high school counselors and principals, from the Financial Aid Office, or through FAFSA on the Internet (https://studentaid.gov/). School Code Number for Howard College is 003574.
  2. Enrolled in at least half-time (6 hours) in an eligible degree or certificate program at Howard College.
  3. Contact the Financial Aid Office to insure that all copies of the Student Aid Report/I.S.I.R. for the Pell Grant are on file in the Financial Aid Office regardless of grant eligibility.

WHAT IS A “WORK-STUDY”?

A Work-Study is a student who works on campus for a department or office in the College. Jobs might include answering phones, filing paperwork, office duties, creative projects, social media, or helping other students. As the name implies, work study students can also study while they complete their hours if their job related duties are complete.

HOW MUCH CAN I MAKE AS A WORK-STUDY?

A Work-Study makes $9 per hour. The number of hours you can work is calculated by Financial Aid. If you are eligible to be a work-study, you may be able to work up to 19 hours per week maximum. Your supervisor will work with you to create a schedule that accommodates your class time and student responsibilities. Most students end up working 12-18 hours per week. Work-study students are paid monthly just like college employees.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO CONSIDER BEING A WORK-STUDY?

Students often find jobs working outside of the college at places like grocery stores or restaurants. It can be difficult to accommodate class schedules and student responsibilities with traditional employers. As a Work-Study, you know your employer will be flexible because your boss is a college employee! Since work-study students work on campus, there’s no need to commute to a job somewhere else. It’s FUN! Most work-study positions involve doing things the college would normally do to help students achieve their goals. It can be a rewarding way to earn extra money. You’ll gain valuable experience and real-world skills to list on your resume and most supervisors are happy to provide a reference letter for future employers.
